The BOSS RC-600 is the most powerful floorboard looper BOSS has ever made — but a lot of its best features are buried in menus the manual barely explains. These are the fourteen settings and tricks I show every new RC-600 owner, in the order I'd want to know them.
Learn the three pedal modes
The track select switch cycles between three pedal modes — white, red, and (press and hold) blue — and each one is a completely different button mapping for the nine footswitches. You'll find them under Menu → Control Functions, where pedal modes 1, 2 and 3 each have their own assignments. Three layouts on tap means one pedalboard can behave like three.
Switch pedal modes from System to Memory
Straight out of the box there's a catch: all three pedal modes are set to System, which makes them global — every song gets the same mappings. Go to Menu → Preferences (page two of the settings) and switch them to Memory. Now every patch can carry its own custom footswitch layout: one layout for song one, a totally different one for song two.
Mix System and Memory per function
It gets better. Some assignments you'll want on every song; others should change per patch. Under Controller Assign → Preferences you can set this per function — a mix of set-and-forget global mappings and per-song customisation.
The one-press mixer shortcut
BOSS removed the physical mixer faders the RC-300 generation had, and scrolling through display modes or digging into the menu mid-performance is too slow. The shortcut: press ENTER. That's it — instant access to the mixer and your loop volume levels with a single button press.
Tip: Fast access to loop levels is the difference between a confident set and a panicked one. Practise reaching the mixer without looking.
Make the loop light indicator useful
The LED loop light flashes the tempo by default, which is distracting and not much else. Head to Menu → Setup → Loop Indicator and change it with knob 4: set it to Loop to display recording status and playback position (like the RC-10R), or Rhythm to show whether the rhythm track is running.
Sync a second Loop Station over MIDI
Upgrading from an RC-300? Don't sell it. Connect the two over the MIDI ports on the back and you've built a nine-track looping rig. Counter-intuitively, make the RC-300 the master unit sending MIDI clock — its older MIDI implementation is poor at receiving clock, but the RC-600 slaves happily.
Jump through memories ten at a time
Scrolling from patch 5 to patch 40 one click at a time takes forever. Press and hold the memory knob down while rotating and you'll move in tens instead of singles.
Use it as a USB audio interface
Since the big firmware update, the RC-600 is a genuinely capable USB audio interface — so underrated the manual barely mentions it. Under Menu → USB → Mode there are two options: Generic gives you a driverless stereo output into your computer, while Vendor (with the official BOSS drivers installed) unlocks multiple independent inputs and outputs for serious routing.
Flip your loops with Reverse
Under Loop Settings → Track → Reverse, activate reverse on any track to play it backwards — instant soundscape textures and loop transitions. Map reverse to an external footswitch to toggle it live, or press and hold the track FX select button and use the All Start footswitch in pedal mode 3.
Colour-code your footswitches
Cheap footswitch caps (a couple of pounds on Amazon) do two jobs: they make the RC-600's small switches physically easier to hit, and they let you colour-code custom mappings — red for record, blue for a clear command, whatever matches your layout so you never forget what you remapped.
Stack functions with push, hold and click
Firmware 1.2 added multi-action assignments: one switch can do different things on press, hold and double-click. My favourite is current track play/stop — play and stop as normal, undo/redo while the track is playing, and track clear once it's stopped. Four functions, one switch. The parameter guide lists everything that's possible.
Factory reset a second-hand unit
Bought yours off eBay or Reverb? Go to Menu → Factory Reset (scroll to the end of the main menu, then press knob 2). You can wipe just the memory banks (1–99), just the system settings, or both for a complete clean slate.
Expand with external switches and expression
Nine footswitches not enough? The two control ports on the back take a BOSS FS-6 or FS-7 — map almost anything to them — or an expression pedal, which is fantastic for riding effect parameters in real time.
Unlock multiple simultaneous effects
The RC-600 ships with 49 input effects and 53 track effects, and unlike older BOSS loopers they actually sound good. But by default the effects mode is set to Single — one at a time. Under Loop Settings → FX → Mode set input and track effects to Multi, and explore the A/B/C/D effect banks for even more slots.
Disable Auto Off (and build your own grooves)
Two housekeeping wins to finish. First: the RC-600 powers itself down after ten hours of inactivity, which will wreck a studio MIDI chain — disable it under Menu → Setup → Auto Off. Second: the free BOSS Rhythm Converter software lets you build your own drum grooves, so if the 200 onboard patterns don't fit your original material, make one that does.
