The RC-500 is the point in the BOSS range where looping becomes a performance instrument: two independent stereo tracks, a real menu system, and a drum machine underneath it all. Here's how I set up every new unit, in order.
Learn the footswitch layout
Three switches out of the box: Track 1 (record / play / overdub, exactly like a stompbox looper — press and hold to undo), Track 2 for your second loop, and Rhythm/Stop. Two tracks is the whole point of this pedal: verse loop on one, chorus loop on the other, switching between them as the song moves.
Understand Setup vs Memory settings
Like the rest of the current BOSS looper family, settings split in two. Setup is global — system-wide parameters that apply to all 99 patches. Memory is per-patch — loop modes, rhythm choice, playback behaviour and levels saved individually per memory slot. Build one patch per song and your set list becomes a sequence of presets rather than a mid-gig menu dive.
Set up your rhythm
The RC-500's drum machine carries 57 patterns with A/B variations across multiple kits. Set the pattern, kit and time signature per patch in the Memory settings, and use tap tempo to lock the BPM to the song. The rhythm can count you in, start with recording, or run independently — experiment with the start modes until the workflow feels natural.
Tip: Practising to the onboard rhythm from day one does more for your looping than any other single habit — loop timing is the skill that makes everything else sound good.
Balance your loop levels
Each track has its own level control, and the playback loop level is adjustable per patch in the Memory settings — the first thing to reach for when your loop swamps your live playing. Set it once per song patch and it's saved.
Decide how tracks interact
In the Memory settings you'll find the playback options that define your arrangement style: whether tracks play together (layered — loop and texture) or one at a time (song parts — the classic verse/chorus A/B setup). There's no right answer; there's the right answer for this song, which is exactly why it's a per-patch setting.
